Wakilur Rahman's solo art exhibition, "Monon Khonon," is now open at Bengal Shilpalay in Dhanmondi. The exhibition delves into the rich material culture of the delta region, blending local elements with contemporary art forms. Rahman’s work captures the deep relationship between the delta people and their environment, creating a bridge between ancient traditions and modern expressions.

Through nine installations using wood, aluminium, iron, and terracotta, Rahman explores the delta’s landscape, materials, and traditional techniques. His art reflects the fluidity of water, the softness of clay, and the symbolic significance of boats, presenting these elements as central to the region's identity. The exhibition highlights how these natural components shape local culture, showing the resilience and adaptability of the delta people.

The artist uses indigenous materials and methods, combined with modern ideas, to spark a dialogue between the past and present. This approach emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural identity in a globalized world, where local traditions often face the risk of fading away.

Rahman’s artistic journey is both thoughtful and intuitive, showcasing his respect for the stories behind each material. His works are not just art pieces but are also repositories of memory and history, echoing the lives and philosophies of the people who inhabit this land.

With over four decades of international experience, Rahman is known for his work across various mediums, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and installations. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka and earned an MFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Currently, he serves as the curator of Kalakendra.

"Monon Khonon," meaning "Unearthing the Archaic," will be on display until September 14 at Bengal Shilpalay. Visitors are invited to explore this evocative exhibition that celebrates the enduring spirit of delta culture.
