A mini version of Tangail’s traditional sweet Chamcham, dubbed as mini Chamcham, is gaining popularity in Tangail town. This sweetmeat is being made at 10 to 12 shops of the town at present.
A good amount of these mini Chamchams is being sold at these shops. There are 25 sweetmeat factories in Patani Bazar of Tangail town. The traditional sweetmeat Chamcham is being made in these factories.
Owners of sweet shops said that they faced losses in their business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, the price of sugar had increased and the price of sweetmeat also increased due to that. Consumers are reluctant to buy sweets because of the increased price of daily products. Due to that, many people search for sweets that are smaller in size. The mini Chamchams are fulfilling this demand of the consumers. At present, per kg of mini Chamcham is being sold at Tk 350 and buyers get 40 pieces of mini Chamcham in one kg.
It was learnt that, owner of Tangail Sweets Dipojjol Saha first made this mini Chamcham six months ago. When this correspondent asked him about the origin of mini Chamcham, he said that around seven to eight months ago, some labourers came to take a bath in a pond in front of his house at Adalatapara. They were using mini pack shampoos. The labourers said they use mini pack shampoos as it is not possible for them to buy large shampoo bottles. If there were no mini pack shampoos, it would have been impossible for them to use shampoos at all.
Dipojjol Saha said hearing about mini pack shampoos from the labourers, he got the idea of making mini Chamchams. In a few days, he implemented his idea. He said that he made mini Chamchams in his factory for the first time around six months ago. There are 12 to 13 pieces of sweets in one kg of Chamcham whereas there are at least 40 pieces of sweets in one kg of mini Chamcham. It became popular among the consumers very soon. He is selling 25 to 30 kg of mini Chamcham every day at present.
As the sale of mini Chamcham is good, the other sweet shop owners are also selling mini Chamcham now. This sweet is being made at 10 to 12 shops at present. Owner of Anondomoyi Sweets Sujan Boshak said Dipojjol Saha first made the mini Chamcham and his sale was satisfactory. They also started making mini Chamchams due to that. They are selling around 30 to 35 kg of mini Chamchams daily and the sale is increasing day by day.
Owner of Kalachand Mishtanno Bhandar Ripon Ghosh said there are 40 pieces of sweets in one kg of mini Chamcham. Because of that, people are buying mini Chamchams more for various programmes. Organisers of different programmes said they cannot supply sweets to all the programmes due to high price of sweetmeats.
As mini Chamcham is smaller in size, they can get more sweets per kg and supply sweets to all kind of programmes now.
