French death metal band Gojira achieved a historic milestone at the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, becoming the first metal band ever to perform at such a prestigious event.

On July 26, Gojira took the stage at the Conciergerie, a historic site by the Seine River, to deliver a powerful and energetic performance of "Ah! Ça Ira." This song, originally popular during the French Revolution, was given a dramatic heavy metal twist by the band. The performance was part of the "Liberty" segment of the ceremony, directed by Thomas Jolly, and was complemented by an impressive display of pyrotechnics that lit up Paris' night sky.

Adding to the spectacle, a performer dressed as a headless Marie Antoinette appeared on screen, singing along with the band. This unusual visual element added a striking and memorable touch to the performance, making it stand out among other acts of the evening.

Gojira, formed in 1996 in the French village of Ondres by brothers Mario and Joe Duplantier, has made a name for itself with its intense music and commitment to environmental issues.

The band has released seven albums and earned three Grammy nominations for their work. Their latest album, "Fortitude" (2021), features a track focused on the plight of the Amazon rainforest, delivered through powerful riffs and guttural vocals.

The Opening Ceremony also featured performances by other major artists. Lady Gaga captivated the audience with a sultry performance of Zizi Jeanmaire’s "Mon Truc En Plumes," complete with vibrant pink pom-poms, evoking the essence of the Moulin Rouge. Céline Dion made a triumphant return to the stage after a long battle with stiff-person syndrome, delivering a heartfelt rendition of Édith Piaf’s "Hymne à L'Amour" from the Eiffel Tower’s balcony.

The 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony showcased a diverse range of musical styles, blending traditional, contemporary, and heavy metal performances to create a memorable and dynamic event.
