Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chandpur Anjana Khan Majlish has said the dredging of sand in
the Meghna river in Chandpur will be stopped for two months from March 1.
“Our decision to stop the dredger is final,” she said. She confirmed the matter on Thursday night.
“For the time being, the dredging will be halted for two months. We will think about the permanent closure later.
Letters will be sent in this regard to the dredger owners,” she added.
She further said that due to dredgers, the breeding of Hilsa is spoiled. Hilsa fry cannot roam freely into the river.
That is why it has been decided to stop the dredging for a while.
The Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute has also been asked to take necessary steps to stop dredgers permanently to protect hilsa.
At the district taskforce meeting, everyone agreed that the dredger should be completely shut down.
“We will take appropriate measures to protect the Hilsa,” DC Anjana Khan Majlish said.
