Six teachers, including the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Maulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology (MBUST) in Tangail, have resigned following student protests. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Forhad Hossain, along with five other teachers in administrative positions, stepped down on Monday night.
The resignations came after students demanded the removal of the VC and other officials, accusing them of failing to ensure the safety of students on campus. The students had given an ultimatum for the VC to resign, and later that night, he submitted his resignation letter to the university's registrar and left the campus in a university ambulance.
The other teachers who resigned include Proctor Dr. Md. Mucha Mia, Sheikh Russell Hall Provost Professor Dr. Md. Idris Ali, Bangabandhu Hall Provost Professor Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, Jahanara Imam Hall Provost Dr. Nargish Akhter, and Deputy Director of the Student Welfare Consulting Center, Faizun Nahar Mim.
The university’s Proctor, Dr. Musa Mia, explained that he had taken on the role during a crisis at the request of the VC. Since the VC resigned, he also submitted his resignation. Dr. Md. Farhad Hossain confirmed his resignation, stating that he had accepted the students' demands and wished for the future success of the university.
Students have expressed concern about the impact of these resignations on their academic progress, particularly with the uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a new VC. They worry about potential delays in their studies until stability is restored at the university.
