Mayors, dist council, UZ chairmen removed

In separate massive moves in the local administration, the Local Government Division has removed mayors of all the 12 city corporations, mayors of 330 municipalities, administrators of 61 Zila Parishad   chairman and chairmen of 495 upazilas across the country.

The government also appointed administrators for those corporations, municipalities, district administrations and UZs.

The Administrators were appointed in the vacated positions, said a gazette notification issued by the local government division today.

The notification said, the mayors were removed from their offices as per the section 13(Ka) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024.

The 12 city corporations are: Dhaka South, Dhaka North, Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barisal, Narayanganj, Cumilla, Rangpur, Gazipur and Mymensingh.

In another notification, the Local Government Division also appointed 12 officers as City Corporation Administrators in accordance with section 25(Ka) of the sub clause (1) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024.

According to the notification, appointed administrators will perform their duties following section 25(Ka) of the sub clause (3) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024. It said additional secretary of the Local Government

 Division Dr Moh Sher Ali was appointed as administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, while additional secretary (director general) of the Local Government Division Md Mahmudul Hasan was appointed as administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation.

Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram will perform his duty as administrator of Chattogram City Corporation, Divisional Commissioner of Khulna will discharge duty as Khulna City Corporation Administrator, Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi will perform duty as administrator of Rajshahi City Corporation, Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet will perform duty as administrator of Sylhet City Corporation, Divisional Commissioner of Barisal to discharge duty as Administrator of Barisal City Corporation, additional secretary of the Local Government Division AHM Kamruzzaman was appointed as administrator of Narayanganj Corporation, director general (additional secretary) of Bangladesh Rural Development Academy (BARD), Cumilla was appointed as administrator of Cumilla City Corporation, Divisional Commissioner of Rangpur will perform duty as administrator of Rangpur City Corporation, Divisional Commissioner of Dhaka will perform duty as administrator of Gazipur City Corporation and Divisional Commissioner of Mymensingh will perform duty as administrator of Mymensingh City Corporation.

"The notification issued in public interest will come into immediate effect," both the notifications read.

323 municipality mayors removed, 60 districts get administrators

Besides, the Local Government Division on Monday removed 323 municipality mayors across the country, according to an official notification issued on Sunday.

The mayors were removed from their offices in application of section 32(A) of the Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, the notification added.

In another notification, the Local Government Division also appointed of 60 officers as Zila Parisad Administrators (except 3 hill tract districts) in application of section 82(A) of the Zila Parishad (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024.

"The notification issued in public interest will come into immediate effect," both the notifications read.

Govt removes 876 elected reps in local admin

Administrators in 61 districts, 495 upazilas, and 330 municipalities appointed

The interim government dismissed 876 elected representatives across the country over the last two days in a major shakeup of local administration.

It appointed administrators in 61 districts, 495 upazilas, and 330 municipalities, mainly replacing elected representatives who served under the previous Awami League government.

The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives issued separate gazette notifications on August 18 and 19 regarding the dismissals and appointments.

In the eight divisional cities, divisional commissioners will now serve as administrators of district councils. In the 53 other districts, DCs (deputy commissioners) have been appointed to the role.

District council chairmen in 60 districts were removed to make these appointments possible, while the office of the Natore district council chairman was declared vacant due to the death of the elected representative. Changes were not made in the district councils of the three Chittagong Hill Tracts districts.

Additionally, the upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) will act as administrators in 495 upazilas until further notice, following the removal of chairmen in 493 upazila parishads. The upazila parishad chairman's office in Khulna's Koyra upazila was declared vacant due to the death of the chairman, while Madaripur's Dasar upazila had not held any elections since being declared a new upazila in 2021.

In a separate gazette issued by the LGRD ministry, 323 municipal mayors were removed from their office as well, alongside seven administrators who were previously appointed at different municipalities. The ministry issued yet another gazette to appoint administrators in all 330 of these municipalities.
