Prominent businessman Mizanur Rahman Masum emerged victorious as the Chairman of the Jhenaidah Upazila Parishad, while Barsha Khatun, also referred to as Barsha Hizra, who identifies as a third gender, was elected as the Woman Vice Chairman. Meanwhile, in Kaliganj Upazila, Shibli Nomani emerged as the chairman, with Shafiquzzaman Rasel elected as the Vice Chairman, as per sources from the Returning Officer's office.
According to Returning Officer and District Election Officer Moklesur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman Masum, running with the Pineapple symbol, garnered 50,746 votes, defeating his closest competitor, JM Rashedul Alam, who secured 43,170 votes with the Inkpot-pen symbol. Barsha Khatun's victory as Vice Chairman adds a significant milestone in inclusivity and diversity in local governance.
In Kaliganj, Shibli Nomani secured victory with the Pine Apple symbol, amassing 42,675 votes, surpassing his nearest rival, Matiar Rahaman, who garnered 5,272 votes. Shahanaz Parvin was elected as the Female Vice Chairman in Kaliganj.
The polls witnessed intense competition, with 10 candidates vying for the Chairman and Vice Chairman positions each in Jhenaidah Sadar and Kaliganj Upazila.
A total of 34 mobile teams, four striking forces, and five platoons of border guards were deployed to ensure the elections were conducted peacefully and fairly.
Additionally, to maintain law and order, four police personnel and 13 Ansar-VDP personnel were stationed at each polling centre.
The successful conclusion of the elections underscores the commitment to democratic processes and represents a step forward in promoting inclusive governance in the region.
