The National Zoo in Dhaka and the Rangpur Zoo are being transformed into the international standard through formulating a master plan, said Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim.
He made the statement while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of a workshop on the preparation of the master plan for the modernization of the National Zoo and Rangpur Zoo at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) auditorium in the capital on Wednesday, joining the programme virtually.
The Minister said, “Our expectation is to upgrade National Zoo and Rangpur Zoo to international standard. A master plan is being formulated for this purpose so that people from our country and abroad can visit the zoo and enjoy. Experienced consulting group has been appointed for this. We will be working together with the international consulting group for the modernization of the zoos.”
He further said that the determination of zones for animals within the zoo and other issues involved will be re-planned if required, including infrastructure planning.
“Other issues will also be considered in the master plan so that the natural environment remains unharmed,” he added.
Director General of the Department of Livestock Dr Manzoor Mohammad Shahzada presided over the workshop.
Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Muhammad Yamin Chowdhury delivered speech as the special guest at the workshop.
Bangladesh National Zoo Director Md Abdul Latif delivered the welcome speech.
Bernard Harrison, Team Leader at Bernard Harrison and Friends Ltd and an international zoo expert, presented an outline of the master plan for the modernization of the National Zoo and Rangpur Zoo and a three-dimensional animation regarding the plan.
