Popular singer and actor Marzuk Russell has recently filed a complaint with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police over fake Facebook accounts. These accounts have been using his name and photos to post false and provocative messages against the government.
On July 28, 2024, Russell met with Additional Commissioner (DB) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid to discuss the issue. Russell chose to meet with the police voluntarily, seeking help after facing repeated problems with fake accounts. Despite having talked about these issues before, no solution was found, which led him to file a formal complaint.
Russell explained that these fake accounts have been causing confusion among his fans. He said, “The provocative posts using my picture and name have been circulating for several days. I am embarrassed by this. Most people are confused, except those who know me well and understand my work.”
He added, “I have been in the entertainment industry for 30-35 years. My friends and colleagues know what I post and what I do not. Many people are misunderstanding me because of these fake posts, as they do not know me personally. I have discussed the issue with the police.”
Russell pointed out that he only has one official Facebook account and page, and he is working on verifying them. He had previously raised similar concerns with the Cybercrime Department but had not received a resolution. His last complaint was made on August 18 last year, regarding unpleasant posts from fake pages and IDs.
The problem with fake accounts has been troubling Russell and his fans, leading him to seek official help to resolve the situation.
