Market cap falls by Tk 35.7 bln on DSE

The market-cap (capitalization) fell by Tk 3,570 crore on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) last week after budget announcement as investors suffered an upset from the budgetary measures.

The market-cap of the DSE decreased by 0.68 percent to Tk 5,193.11 billion on Thursday over the previous week amounting to Tk 5228.81 billion.

Besides, stocks witnessed downward trend in the first week after unveiling the national budget as most of the investors were busy selling their shares.

DSEX, the key index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), decreased by 54.56 points or 0.84 percent to close at 6,425.74, after gaining over 242 points in the past two weeks.

Although stocks of the last two days of the week closed higher on the finance minister's latest remark on stock market, stocks, never the less, fell in the week.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal Wednesday said that the stock market would make a turn around when the new budget implementation begins.

Earlier on June 9, the finance minister placed a record Tk 6.78 trillion national budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2022-23 before the parliament.

Market analysts said the budgetary measures cannot fulfill the investors’ expectation along instability of exchange rates, rising inflation made investors cautious.

The new budget has proposed no new incentives, other than the reduction in corporate tax for the listed companies on some conditions.

However, DSE 30 Index, comprising blue chips, went down by 24.44 points to settle at 2,327 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) fell by 10.49 points to finish at 1,403.

Out of 389 issues traded, 251 declined, 117 advanced and 21 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

The week's total turnover stood at Tk 43 billion on the DSE from Tk 43.42 billion in the previous week.

The daily average turnover stood at Tk 8.60 billion, down by 0.96 percent from the previous week's average of Tk 8.68 billion.

Newly listed Meghna Insurance was the week's top gainer, posting a 59.50 percent gain, while Bangladesh General Insurance Company was the worst loser, losing 9.33 percent.

On the other hand, the port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) saw lower with its selective category index (CSCX) falling 80 points in the last week to close at 11,410 points.

The All-Share Price Index (CASPI) of the CSE was also lower by 127 points to close at 18,898 points.

Of the 347 issues traded, 125 advanced, 199 declined and 23 remained unchanged on the CSE trading floor.

The port city's bourse traded 8.29 crore shares and mutual fund units with turnover value of Tk 250 crore during the last week.
