Bangladesh's first maritime university has made a significant leap by establishing the Maritime University Law and Moot Court Society (MU-LMCS). This new initiative marks the first law society in the institution, highlighting its growing role in maritime legal education and research.

The MU-LMCS recently introduced its Founding Executive Committee, tasked with steering society towards academic excellence and competitive success. President Sifat Tasnim and General Secretary Sheikh Mehbuba Moitree will lead this transformative effort.

Sifat, known for her outstanding mooting skills, expressed the society's mission: “We aim to create a vibrant platform for students to tackle complex legal issues, particularly those related to maritime and international law.” She emphasised the goal of representing the university in national and international mot court competitions.

Moitree, a respected contributor to the Bangladesh Post, plans to focus on research and legal scholarship. “MU-LMCS is not just about advocacy; it’s a hub for critical research and analysis,” she stated. The society will equip students with the skills needed to influence policy and legal practice in maritime law.

The founding committee has ambitious plans for the year ahead, including workshops, guest lectures, and seminars with experts in maritime law. Moitree is leading efforts to publish academic works showcasing the university's research talents in international and maritime law, areas she is passionate about.

“Our aim is to highlight the blue economy's potential and its legal implications,” she shared. This commitment to rigorous scholarship will position MU-LMCS as a significant contributor to the discourse on maritime law, both nationally and internationally.

The Executive Committee envisions MU-LMCS as a catalyst for change, focusing on the legal aspects of maritime issues. Members aspire to create a legacy that promotes critical thinking, practical advocacy, and thorough research, which will help establish the university as a leader in legal education.

“MU-LMCS will prepare our students to face real-world legal challenges and advocate effectively in maritime and international law,” said Sifat. “Our activities will provide invaluable experiences, and our publications will contribute to legal scholarship in Bangladesh.”

The Maritime University is set to strengthen its reputation with the addition of MU-LMCS. This society will nurture a generation of law students who are not only skilled in mooting but also equipped to influence legal and maritime policy on global stages.

As the first academic year begins, there is optimism that MU-LMCS will become a cornerstone of legal education at Maritime University. With Sifat’s advocacy focus and Moitree’s research leadership, the society is well-positioned to make substantial contributions to Bangladesh’s maritime legal landscape.
