America Ferrera joins the cast of Warner Bros’ and Mattel’s Barbie movie, co-starring opposite Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Directed and co-written by Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig, the live-action film will center around Mattel children’s toys, with Robbie as Barbie and Gosling as Ken. The live-action movie adaptation of the beloved doll has been in the works for several years, with stars like Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway being previously attached to the starring role.
Now, according to Deadline, Superstore star Ferrera is set to co-star in the upcoming live-action Barbie film. Robbie will be producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment production banner, alongside LuckyChap’s co-founder Tom Ackerley. Although Ferrera is slated to join the cast, the specific details of her role and the film's plot are still being kept under wraps. Besides Ferrera's casting announcement for the upcoming Warner Bros. film, she will also be making her feature directorial debut with New York Times bestselling novel, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, by Erika L. Sánchez.
Barbie will mark the first live-action movie release from Mattel Films, with Robbie Brenner producing through the film production division of Mattel. The long-awaited film adaptation of the children’s toy will not be the first to premiere on the big screen, with previous blockbuster movies for franchises like Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the Trolls have all received major feature film adaptations. Last year, Lena Dunham also announced that she’ll be directing a live-action film based on the '90s toy Polly Pocket. Although specific plot details for Ferrera’s role have been undisclosed, the film is slated for a 2023 theatrical release. With Gerwig on board to direct her third feature film following her preceding films, many may anticipate the live-action portrayal of the popular doll to trail the same success.
