Marginalised people suffer most

A view-exchange meeting on climate change and healthcare was held in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district on Thursdaywith the participation of local health and other government officials.

Shyamnagar Upazila Parishad Chairman Syeduzzaman Sayeed was the chief guest at the discussion meeting organised by Friendship Hospital while Friendship Hospital's Head of Communications TanzinaSharmin was present as the special guest.

Jilful Murad Shanu, public relations manager of Friendship Hospital, moderated the view-exchange meeting while Shyamnagar Upazila Family Planning Officer Dr Moinul Islam, Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Rafiqul Islam, Deputy Director of Health Department Dr ATMSanaul Bashar, Friendship Hospital, Shyamnagar Director Lt Col (retd)  DrMojahedul Islam, officials of different government and non-government institutions, teachers and students of educational institutions and journalists participated in the view-exchange meeting. The speakers said marginalised people are suffering from various health problems due to climate change. Health problems, including high blood pressure and inflammation of the urinary tract in women, are increasing due to water salinity.  They urged all government and private medical centres to be more active in providing healthcare to the marginalised people. Climate change is severely affecting the lives of the marginalised people but they do not know the extent of the words “climate change”. They are now facing more natural disasters than before while rising salinity and chronic health problems are now common in coastal areas. People in this region have been suffering from various health problems, including high blood pressure, urinary tract inflammation in women and cervical cancer, for years, they said.  They urged all medical centres in Shyamnagar along with Friendship Hospital to play a more active role in solving health problems related to the climate change.
