The marginal farmers of Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj are earning their livelihood by collecting and selling sungrass, a thin and 1.5 metres long grass used for cattle feed, as well as for making rope, bag, basket, mat and other products.
According to local sources, the sungrass fields started to flourish as flood waters receded, reaching about a foot in height. The farmers have started to sell it as livestock feed in the market. The grass is in high demand, both as animal food and as a vital source of income for the farmers.
The marginal farmers transport the sungrass by boat across the Jamuna River to their villages, where they lay it out to dry and prepare it for sale.
After drying, they start selling the sungrass. They earn their living by selling the dried grass in the local market. Besides, many families make a living by selling this sungrass in different places of the char area in Shahjadpur, Belkuchi and Sirajganj sadar upazila. These dry bundles are used for making roof and as materials for various mats, baskets, ropes and other items. Many families, particularly those in the char areas who are widowed, landless, or otherwise disadvantaged, rely on selling this grass for their livelihoods. It has become a key source of income and employment for numerous households.
Farmers sell both the raw and dry sungrass. The raw sungrass is used as animal food, while the dried sungrass is used in building materials and household items.
Kazipur Upazila Agriculture Officer, Shariful Islam, said that nearly half the year, collecting and selling sungrass grass sustains many low-income families and marginal farmers. The income generated from this resource not only supports daily needs but also enables them to improve their living condition.
