Although the office of the assistant director of Bangladesh road transport authority (BRTA) has earned an amount of Taka over 15 crores in last 22 months, the activities of the office was hampered badly when the authorities could not provide necessary manpower to ensure better services.
A few numbers of officers have been rendering services to the clients including motor vehicles owners and drivers. But the scenario of the office was changed when the digitalized services in the office was started in March last.
No pending files was visible in the office rack and the long queue of the service receivers was no more where the people seeking service es in a single line. Harassment of the so-called brokers along with a some of the dishonest people, was almost unseen in the office premises.
Some Hazrat Ali, of village Goalpara in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila rushing at the office said, he could not appear to submit his documents for a learner license for his motorbike. When he appeared for the second time was advised to visit once again for faulty server system.
As he rushed the office on Thursday, the officials had taken his figureprint and assured of delivering the license at his home premises within a week or two by postal mail. It will save his money and time. He did not see any broker at the office premises, Hazrat Ali said.
BRTA office sources said an assistant director (AD), engineering has been playing role of his own and another AD administrator since long. Two vehicles inspectors out of required three have been providing services there. Positions of four upper division assistants (UDAs) were vacant where a single UD has been serving.
The status of the office assistants (OAs) was same where lone serving since inception. Positions of two assistant revenue officers and a recordkeeper were lying vacant. They have been providing services to the people without considering the office hours to make the services hassle-free and comfortable.
Crisis of adequate fingerprint machines and motor vehicles have been also hampering the activities in the office. BRTA assistant director (AD) Atiar Rahman when contacted, said ignoring acute manpower shortage and machinery crisis they had earned an amount of Taka 15 crore 63 thousand 562 between September 6 of 2021 and July 13 last.
Settling 18,453 cases of vehicles registration, 1,841 ownership transfer, 109 fitness issues, 102 route permit issues, 17,151 tax token issues, 36,392 learners’ license issues and another one thousand cases of other issues were settled during the time.
If the manpower shortage, machinery and transport crisis issues might be removed, they could ensure better service to the people and play role in revenue collection, Atiar Rahman expressed his hope.
