Man killed in wild elephant attack in Cox’s Bazar

A man was killed as a wild elephant attacked him in Borchora Darianagar area adjacent to marine drive road in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.

Range Officer of Cox’s Bazar South Forrest Division Somir Ranjoun Shah said the incident occurred at Borochora Darianagar area under ward No. 1 of Jhilongjha union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila on early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Monir Alam, 50, son of late Kala Mia, resident of Borochora Darianagar area under Jhilongjha union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar.

Quoting the locals, Somir Ronjoun Shah said several wild elephants reside in Himchari reserve forest of Cox’s Bazar South Forest Division. Those elephants come to the locality sometimes. A wild elephant entered the locality in Borochora Darianagar area on Friday before dawn. The terrified people informed the local Forest Division about the incident at that time.

He said the locals tried to drive the elephant away before personnel from Forest Division reached the scene. A person was injured in the elephant attack at that time. Later, he was rescued and taken to the Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

The Range Officer also said that the Forest Division personnel successfully sent the elephant back to the forest with the help of the locals after reaching the scene. The locality in Borochora Darianagar area has been developed in the last three decades and this is the first time a man was killed in a wild elephant attack. Panic has spread among the locals after the 

incident. The body was handed over to the relatives, said Somin Ronjoun Shah.
