The driver of a ride-sharing platform on Wednesday set his own motorcycle on fire after traffic police had allegedly harassed him in city’s Badda area
He was identified as Shawkat Ali ,46, a rider of Pathao ride sharing company. The video of the incident became viral on social media sites.
It was seen in the video that the driver became very angry when traffic police stopped him for breaching traffic rules.
Police was also seen requesting him to show vehicle documents. The rider got agitated during argument with the police. At one stage, he set his bike on fire.
He also obstructed pedestrians who came forward to douse the fire.
According to Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station, police asked the rider to show his papers for traffic rule violation. Being angry, he set on his own bike, he said, adding that police doused the fire.
The driver was brought to the police station for quizzing, the OC said further.
After interrogating him, he was released. He could not be reached for his comment over the issue.
Quoting the rider, police officials said that he was severely affected financially due to the pandemic and was going through some psychological issues too. Earlier, he incurred a loss of around Tk 9 lakh after running a shop. He is burdened with debt.
