Since the fall of the Awami League government, many leaders and activists have been gripped by the fear of lawsuits. Those who were active in the streets over the past 16 years are either in hiding or facing legal cases. Some are even trying to flee the country.
This situation has caused concern among celebrities, especially those involved in Awami League politics. Dhaka movie star Mahiya Mahi is one of them. She previously held the position of joint general secretary in the Central Committee of Bangabandhu Cultural Alliance and was nominated by the party in the 12th National Assembly elections. Mahi was often seen in Awami League campaigns.
Since August 5, however, Mahi has been avoiding public appearances. She has only been active on social media, but efforts to contact her via mobile or WhatsApp have been unsuccessful. She is not even seen on film sets.
According to her close friends, Mahi has become very cautious since the government's fall. Given the current situation and her past involvement in political campaigns, she is reportedly feeling uneasy. This fear seems to be linked to recent cases filed against several film industry stars.
A few days ago, Mahi was questioned by security personnel at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while leaving the country. She had to sit for an hour and a half, facing various questions from intelligence officials.
This incident has only increased her apprehension. Her friends believe Mahi is worried about her safety and future amid this uncertain political climate.
