Madaripur met office housed in 150-year-old building

The Madaripur Meteorological Office is running without adequate manpower in the 150-year-old building. Valuable parts including necessary paperwork are being wasted in rain water and plaster shell. Due to the slow speed of the Internet, there are many problems in providing timely weather information.

Senior Weather Observer AH Rahim said that since the establishment of Madaripur Meteorological Observatory on the 150-year-old building at Kulpadi in Madaripur in 1975, no new building has been constructed and no such renovation has been done. On the other hand, the Madaripur Meteorological Observatory, established 47 years ago, is being operated by only four people as opposed to 12 posts.

He further said that the internet situation here is very fragile which makes it very difficult to provide weather information to the weather server. With modern buildings and manpower, we will be able to send data in a dynamic way. 

Meteorological Observatory Md. Moniruzzaman requested the authorities to take urgent steps to resolve the issue.

It was reported on the spot that trees were scattered all over the inside of the office, big grass grew on the ground, where different kinds of snakes sometimes found. Narrow roads often sees untoward accident. In the rain, while trying to get a reading of Rainbow machine, the reader would occasionally go down. The condition of the office building is not good. Doors, windows, chairs, tables all are damaged. 

The plaster on the roofs and walls of the expired building is falling off. The building is home to weevils, cockroaches and rats. Different types of trees have grown in several places of the building. Valuable parts including barometers, barograph, thermometers, minimums, hairy graphs are damaged by rain water. 

Anytime the building could collapses, a major accident can happen. People around the office said that there is no security in it, sometimes there are thefts. There is no safety for the people and the equipment of this office. 

Madaripur Meteorological Observatory Mohammad Moniruzzaman said senior officials have been informed to construct the new building and hoped that work would be done soon. Work is underway to get high speed internet facility.
