The prices of daily commodities are increasing in phases in most local markets. The prices of flour and pulses have increased by Tk 10 per kg within a week.
Despite the shortage of edible oil, after the announcement of price hike, its supply in the market has increased. But sugar is not available. The trend in high prices of almost all commodities increased sufferings of middle and low income people.
One of the most essential item - sugar seems to be not available in most of the shops in Karwan Bazaar on Friday. Soybean oil, supply like sugar, is in short supply for the last couple of weeks. However, on Thursday (November 17th) the price of edible oil increased by Tk 12 per liter. Traders said that the price of imported goods has increased due to the high value of the dollar. On the other hand, except for these two products and rice, the rest of the products are almost entirely dependent on imports. They are gradually turning costlier as the price of the product is not fixed. And at the end of the season, the price of rice increases as the supply decreases.
Meanwhile, one liter bottle of soybean oil is being sold at Tk 190. Which was Tk 178 earlier. As the new price, five liter bottle of soybean oil is now Tk 925. Earlier it was Tk 880. The new price of unpacked soybean oil is sold at Tk 172 per litre. Last week it was Tk 158.
Besides, the price of packaged sugar has been increased by Tk 13 per kg reaching Tk 108 a litre. Lose sugar is being sold at the price of Tk 120 per kg in the market. In some places, sugar was seen to be sold at a slightly lower price of Tk115.
On the other hand, prices of almost all types of pulses have been on the rise for over a month. The price of gram is increasing again. Lentils are being sold at Tk 110 to Tk 140 per kg in the open market and chickpeas are being sold at Tk 85 to Tk 90 per kg with an increase of Tk 5 per kg.
Coarse rice has increased by Tk 2 to Tk 3 per kg. Pajam or coarse rice is being sold at Tk 54 to Tk 60 per kg, which was Tk 52 to Tk 58 last week. And medium quality rice has to be bought at Tk 70 to Tk 75 and good quality fine rice is sold at above Tk 80.
There is no relief in the vegetable market too. The prices of new winter vegetables have skyrocketed. A kg of freshly grown potatoes is Tk 100 per kg. And imported carrots are being sold at Tk 140.
