Lockdown in 49 more areas in Dhaka likely

The government is likely to impose a complete lockdown in 49 more areas in Dhaka in a bid to prevent the spread of the highly contagious coronavirus, sources said.

The decision on fresh lockdown came from the high-level of the government that includes concerned ministers and top officials from health, home, local government ministries in addition to mayors of Dhaka’s two city corporations, the sources added.

The government on June 9 formulated a guideline titled “Bangladesh Risk Zone Based COVID-19 Contaminate Implementation Strategy” considering that the virus would spread exceedingly across the country.

As per the guideline, an area in Dhaka city with at least 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus will be marked as a red zone where a lockdown will be in force.

On the other, an area outside the capital with more than 10 Covid-19 cases will be considered as a red zone and a lockdown will be imposed.

According the sources, 49 more areas in Dhaka were found to have over 60 Covid-19 patients. So, lockdown would be in forces in those areas.

Sources at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), areas those are marked in the capital are Adabar, Agargaon, Azimpur, Babubazar, Badda, Bonoshree, Banani, Bongshal, Basabo, Basundhara, Chawkbazar, Demra, Dhanmondi, Eskaton, Farmgate, Gendaria, GreenRoad, Gulshan, Hazaribagh, Jatrabari, Jurain, Kalyanpur, Kalabagan, Kakrail, Kamrangirchar, Khilgaon, Lalbagh, Lalmatia, Malibbagh, Mirpur-1, Mirpur-12, Moghbazar, Mohakhali, Mohammadpur, Matijheel, Mughda, Paltan, Rajarbagh, Rampura, Ramna, Shahjahanpur, Shahbagh, Shyamoli, Shantinagar, Sher-e-Banglanagar, Tejgaon, Uttara and Wari.

Earlier on June 9, lockdowns were imposed in capital’s Rajabazar and several areas in Chattogram, Narayanganj, Narsinghdi and Gazipur districts to stem the spread of Covid-19 the disease caused by coronavirus.

According to official concerned, the moves of zone-based lockdown were not totally effective since the residents were seen trying to going out defying the instructions.

As of Saturday, more than 7,675,000 people so far have been infected from coronavirus and over 426,000 died of it since the virus was first reported in China’s city of Wuhan late last year.

Bangladesh has so far reported 84,379 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 1,139 deaths with 2,856 new cases and 44 deaths in the last 24 hours till Saturday.
