The literacy rate in the country has increased by 22.89 percent to stand at 74.66 percent, which was 51.77 percent in 2011, a Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) report said.
The primary data of the Population and Housing Census 2022 was revealed at an event at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The literacy rate in the urban areas is 81.28 percent while in rural areas it is 71.56 percent.
The rate is higher among the male population which is 76.56 percent, while among female population it is 72.82 percent.
The highest literacy rate is in Dhaka division which is 78.09 and lowest In Mymensingh which is 67.09 percent.
National Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was present as the chief guest in the event while Planning Minister MA Mannan chaired the event.
State Minister of Public Administration Farhad Hossain, State Minister of Planning Shamsul Alam were present as special guests.
