Literacy Day observed countrywide

Like other countries, the International Literacy Day-2019 was observed in Bangladesh on Sunday in a befitting manner. The theme of this year’s day is ‘Literacy and Multilingualism’.

Government and non-government organisations chalked out various programmes across the country on the occasion. Our district correspondents sent reports over observance of the day. 

In Rajshahi, the day was observed here as elsewhere in the country in a befitting manner, reports our Rajshahi Correspondent.

District Administration organised a colourful rally, discussion meeting and film show amidst huge public gathering in the city in observance of the day.

A discussion meeting was also held t highlighting significance of the day. Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Jakir Hossain addressed the meeting as the chief guest while retired Principal of Shahmukhdum Degree College Dr Tasiqul Islam spoke as focal person with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Shariful Haque in the chair.

The discussion was followed by a film-show focusing on importance of literacy in the national and social life.

In Chuadanga, the day was celebrated in the district with the slogan ‘literacy in many languages, assurance of a better life,’ reports our Chuadanga Correspondent. 

On the occasion, a colorful rally was brought out from the Deputy Commissioner's office and ended at the same place after parading the district town.  

Later, a meeting was held in the conference room of the DC office. Deputy Commissioner Nazrul Islam Sarkar was the chief guest. 

Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Yah Ya Khan presided over the meeting, while Municipal Mayor Obaidur Rahman Chowdhury, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Abul Bashar, Additional District Magistrate Monira Parveen and Organizing Secretary of district AL Munsi Alamgir Hannan were present as special guests. The meeting discussed issues related to increasing literacy rate in the country.

In Sunamganj, the district administration brought out a colourful procession in the district town marking the day. Students and teachers of various schools and colleges and people from all walks of life took part in the procession, reports our Sunamganj Correspondent. 

Later, discussion was held at the Shaheed Abul Hossain Auditorium. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sunamganj Mohammad Abdul Ahmed presided over the discussion, while Deputy Director of the local government department Mohammad Emran Hossain, ADC (Education and ICT) Harun-ur-Rashid, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sunamganj Sadar Yeasmin Nahar Ruma, additional police super Hayatun Nabi, district primary education officer Samad Hossain, Sunamganj Government Jubilee High School headmaster Faizur Rahman, district information officer Anowar Hossain and others gave speeches during the event. 

The speakers at the event said that everyone must work together to increase the literacy rate of the country. We must help transform each and every person into human resource for the country. The literacy rate in the country has increased thanks to the relentless effort by the current government. The speakers stressed the need to eliminate hunger, poverty and illiteracy from the country to fulfill Bangabandhu’s dream of ‘Sonar Bangla’.

In Magura, Magura district unit of Association of Development Agencies in Bangladesh (ADAB) organised different programmes to observe the day, reports our Magura Correspondent. 

They brought out a rally in the town in the morning. Subsequently they arranged a discussion meeting at the office premises of DC of Magura. ADAB, Magura district unit general secretary Abu Imam Md Baker and ADAB khulan division coordinator Rezaul Islam spoke in the meeting with ADAB Magura district unit president Kazi Kamruzzman in the chair.

In Manikganj, the International Literacy Day 2019 was observed in the district in a befitting manner with a call of attaining 100 percent literacy, reports our Manikganj Correspondent. 

On the occasion, Manikganj District administration and Bureau of Informal Education jointly arranged different programmes.

A two-day programme was taken including essay writing and debating competition for the school students, discussion, distribution of prizes and cultural function.

A colorful rally was brought out in the town with participation of government officials, teachers, students, and NGO workers.

After the rally, a discussion was held at the Martyrdom Freedom Fighters Memorial to supplement the government’s efforts for increasing literacy in the country.
