BGMEA leaders on Thursday said the liquidity crisis in the bank may hinder timely payment of wages to the workers of apparel industry.
The leaders of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) expressed concern while exchanging views with the factory owners at a meeting at its office in Uttara.
BGMEA called the meeting to discuss the security issues and the overall situation of the garment industry. Acting President of BGMEA Khandaker Rafiqul Islam presided over the meeting.
Leaders expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families of the students and other people who were martyred in the anti-discrimination student movement. They prayed for the salvation of their departed souls and speedy recovery of the injured persons.
Meanwhile, the general members strongly condemned the unexpected incident that took place at the BGMEA head office in Uttara on 7th August 2024.
They said, despite the difference of opinion, indecent demands for reforms beyond the prevailing rules in business organizations are not acceptable at all.
They expressed deep concern about the security of BGMEA and said that if such incidents repeat, it will undoubtedly send a negative message to foreign buyers about the industry and BGMEA, which is not good for the industry in any way.
The meeting also discussed the overall situation of the industry along with the current challenges.
Due to the liquidity crisis in the bank, they expressed their anxiety about how the entrepreneurs have to speed up the payment of wages to the workers on time.
They also discussed how to continue the operation of the factory by ensuring security in their own system with the risk of factory vandalism and situation of Chittagong port, safety of industrial goods vehicles on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
1st Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, Vice President Arshad Jamal (Dipu), Abdullah Hil Rakib ,Vice President (Finance) Md. Nasir Uddin, directors and entrepreneurs of garment industry were also present in the meeting.
