A teenage girl was killed after being struck by lightning in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Roksana Akter, 17, daughter of Zaker Ahmed, resident of Koralkhali area under ward no. 9 in Saharbil union of the upazila.
Local Union Parishad (UP) member Arju Ara Begum confirmed the matter, saying, the incident occurred in the Koralkhali area at around 5.30pm.
UP member Arju Ara Begum said the sky suddenly became overcast on Tuesday evening. Shortly after, rain accompanied by thunderstorms began. Roksana went to the courtyard of their house to bring in the clothes that were drying in there. A lightning struck her at that time. As a result, she died on the spot.
The matter was reported to the police and upazila administration, she added. Confirming the matter, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Chakaria police station, Manjur Quader Bhuiyan said, I was informed about the incident through the local public representative. The body of the deceased is at her house.
