The leader of regional commander of the banned Communist Party of East Bengal (CPEB) was shot to death by some miscreants in daylight at Hajirhat area in Monirampur Upazila of Jashore on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 55, son of late Amarot Ali of Modhupur village of the upazila.
He was at one time the regional commander of the banned Communist Party of East Bengal.
He later left the banned party and returned to normal life. Before his death, he used to make a living by driving an easy bike.
Manirampur police recovered the body from the spot as well as Rafiq's easy bike lying next to the body and sent it to Jashore general Hospital for autopsy.
Locals said Rafiq was returning to Manirampur after dropping off passengers at Sundali Bazar, when he reached the empty space next to Hajirhat area beside the Diganga-Kuchalia Secondary School, some unidentified miscreants shot him and left the body.
Manirampur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Shikdar Matiar Rahman said it was not yet known who shot and killed Rafiqul in broad daylight. A case was filed with Monirampur Police station in this connection.
