Winter rainfall on Thursday night and Friday has badly damaged newly transplanted Boro saplings, winter crops, spices and raw-bricks at brick fields of Rajshahi district.
According to Meteorological Office sources in Rajshahi, due to low-pressure on the Bay of Bengal, there was a moderate amount of rainfall from Thursday to Friday midnight and a 44 mm rainfall was recorded during this time period.
Farmers of the district informed the sudden rainfall accumulated water in the fields which plunged their newly transplanted Boro saplings. Moreover, the waterlogging has also plunged their seed-beds of paddy and vegetables. They apprehended, if the accumulated water is not removed from the field within a day or two, newly transplanted paddy saplings and various vegetables would be damaged completely. As a result, they will need to re-transplant the saplings in their fields which would also increase their cultivation cost. Thus, farmers in the area are apprehending a huge loss.
On the other hand, the owners of Brickfields have said the sudden rainfall has damaged thousands of raw-bricks kept in rows to burn. As a result, all the brick-field owners of the district will incur a huge loss.
Farmer Monsur Rahman of Manda upazila informed, paddy saplings of the seed bed of some 40-kgs of paddy in his field has been inundated by the sudden rainfall. If the water is not removed within a day or two, all the saplings on the seed bed would become damaged completely.
Abul Kalam of Durgapur upazila informed that he transplanted saplings of onion on some 15-bigha of land. The sudden rainfall has created water logging in the fields and the newly transplanted saplings might damage completely if water is not recessed soon.
Khalilur Rahman, Manager of a brick kiln at Bijoynagar village under Godagari upazila informed, a winter rainfall has caused a huge as a huge number of raw bricks have been damaged again in two days rainfall. The total loss from the damaged bricks would surpass 5 lakhs, he feared.
Alhaj Abdul Quddus, Owner of BBC Brick field at Maskatadighi under Katakhali Police station informed, in his field, more than 200,000 raw-bricks were kept in rows to dry those in the sun and to burn those. But, an untimely rainfall has damaged all his raw bricks. The sudden rainfall has caused a huge loss for his field, he added.
There was a huge damage of various types of Rabi crops including mustard, lentil, sesame and gram in the rain at Char villages under Paba, Charghat, Bagha and Godagari upazilas. Moreover, fields of various vegetables including potato, cabbage- cauliflower, leafy-vegetables, onion and garlic were also inundated damaging those vegetables.
DAE sources of Rajshahi informed that the rainfall is no more and there was sunshine on late afternoon of Saturday and on Sunday. The accumulated water in the field is unlikely to damage the vegetables and spies in the field but the paddy seed beds are likely to be damaged if water is removed from the field as soon as possible.
