Landslides triggered from torrential rain caused death of four people, including two children in Cox’s Bazar town and its adjacent areas on Thursday.
A child was killed due to a landslide in Saikat Para area of Cox’s Bazar on Thursday night. Three persons of the same family were injured in the incident.
Earlier on the day, three others were killed in separate landslides in the district.
The deceased are Jamila Akter, 30, wife of Mohammad Karim, resident of ABC Ghona area on the district town, Nazmul Hasan, 5, son of Saiful Islam, resident of Sikder Bazar area, Mim, 13, daughter of Md Selim, resident of Saikat Para, and Layla Begum, 35, wife of Bazal Ahmed, resident of Dakkhin Muhuripara Patabunia area under Jhilongja union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rakibuzzaman confirmed the matter.
Quoting the firefighters and locals, he said a chunk of hill fell on the house of Selim, resident of Saikat Para in Cox’s Bazar town at 8:00pm on Thursday. On information, members of fire service rushed to the spot and rescued three injured people with the assistance of the locals. Later, they recovered the body of a girl, Mim, from the place.
Rakibuzzaman also said torrential rain started on Wednesday midnight and continued in Cox’s Bazar town. A chunk of mud suddenly fell on Saiful Islam’s house in Sikder Bazar area on Thursday morning. His sleeping baby died in the incident.
A woman, Jamila Akter, resident of ABC Ghona area of the district, was killed when a chunk of hill fell on her when she was sleeping in the morning. She was taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctor declared her dead, the OC said quoting her family members.
On the other hand, separate landslides occurred in Dakkhin Muhuripara Patabunia area under Jhilongja union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar. Another woman, Layla Begum was killed in the landslide occurred in the area at around 3:30pm. Her baby was also injured in the incident, he added.
Besides, the vehicular movement was disrupted on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road in Himchhari area from Thursday morning. Landslides and crack on the hill were reported in several places of Cox’s Bazar town and other parts of the district. District and Upazila administrations were raising awareness among the residents of the area to move to safer places.
Meteorologist of Cox’s Bazar Weather Office Md Abdul Hannan said 334 millimeter rain was recorded from 6:00pm Wednesday to 6:00pm Thursday.
