Narayanganj unit of an RMG factory workers’ organisation named Mukto Garments Sromik federation was formed recently.
Most of the committee members are allegedly not labourer of the sector concerned.
A source claimed that none of the thirty one members of the committee is a readymade garments worker whereas, according to the labour organizations body rule, 90% members should be RMG workers and 10% members might come from non-labour professions.
The newly formed committee members offered a floral tribute to a slain labour leader at Bandar upazila in Narayanganj on June 9.
Questions are raised against the general secretary of the committee Sobuj Sikder who came from Borguna and an accused of several criminal cases including a river labourer murder case with Bandar police station.
A leaseholder of 5 number ferry ghat in Shitalakhya river near BIWTA office anonymously told the Bangladesh Post that only 10-12 years ago Sobuj Sikder was a tea vendor at the North side of BIWTA office that has become millionaire through extortion.
Requesting not to mention his name a BIWTC worker of Narayanganj said that Sobuj Sikder has no official job of BIWTA or BIWTC but he has 4 goods carrier ship (bulkhead) that each cost more or less 2 crore.
An extortion case was filed with Narayanganj Sadar police station two years ago accusing Sobuj Sikder and his associates. In addition, a stealing case was found against Sobuj Sikder, a reliable source informed.
Being astonished, a few workers of BIWTC told this correspondent it’s unimagination how Sobuj Sikder became a multi-millionaire just in 12 years.
They also questioned what does the river police do to stop Sobuj Sikder’s gang.
