Kiran Rao's film Laapataa Ladies is gaining immense popularity, extending its success far beyond India. The movie, which has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, has made an impressive mark at the Japan box office.

As per trade reports, Laapataa Ladies has surpassed the lifetime earnings of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Prabhas’s Salaar: Part I - Ceasefire in Japan. Directed by Rao, the rural comedy-drama collected 50 million yen (approximately Rs 2.75 crore) within 45 days. In comparison, Pathaan earned 50 million yen, while Salaar collected 46 million yen during their runs in Japan, according to Sacnilk.

While SS Rajamouli’s RRR remains the highest-grossing Indian film in Japan with an impressive 2.40 billion yen (approximately Rs 130 crore), the performance of Laapataa Ladies has been exceptional. Globally, the film has grossed around Rs 31 crore, with Rs 25 crore from the Indian market and a significant contribution from international audiences.

The film narrates a humorous and heartwarming tale of two brides who are mistakenly swapped at a railway station, leading to a series of comedic events and meaningful life lessons. It stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava in pivotal roles.

Produced by Aamir Khan, Laapataa Ladies showcases its potential to climb higher on the box office ladder in Japan, possibly outpacing earlier Indian hits such as Baahubali: The Beginning (75 million yen) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (80 million yen).

The film’s success reflects its growing appeal among international audiences, positioning it as a strong contender in the global market. Its box office achievements underline the universal resonance of its story and performances.
