Amrapali mango produced in the hills is famous all over the country. Due to the demand for this mango, cultivation has increased over time. Compared to last year, mango production in Khagrachhari district has increased.
However, farmers are worried about selling mangoes due to coronavirus. Farmers said that if they could not market mangoes on time, they would have to incur losses.
It is known that the soil of the hills is fertile and the yield of mango is good. Mangoes from here go to different parts of the country to meet the local demand. Amrapali, Ranguin, Bari-4, 8 and 11 varieties are mainly cultivated in the hills.
Animesh Chakma Rinku, an adviser to President of the Khagrachhari Orchard Owners and the Fruit Orchard Owners Association said, “Although the mango yield is good, we are worried about the marketing.
There are also fears of not getting better prices than last year due to corona on it. It has been demanded to bring the farmers under government incentives in the interest of helping them.”
According to the Agriculture Department, about 29,196 metric tons of mango has been produced in 3,244 hectares of land in Khagrachhari this year which is 196 metric tons more than last year.
Maturjo Ali, Deputy Director, Khagrachhari Agriculture Extension Department said, “We have already discussed. We will take seriously the fact that those who come to Khagrachhari to buy mangoes from outside can buy them without any hindrance. We are also considering giving agricultural incentives if the farmers cannot sell mangoes due to coronavirus.”
Meanwhile, the locals expect the government to take a leading role in marketing the product with special consideration to save the farmers and mango growers.
