Lone Selim Hossain stood with a banner on the road in Puthia upazila Sadar demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of the rapist and instigators of the suicide of her daughter on June-10.
By watching Selim standing alone on the road with the banner, conscious citizens of various organisations of Rajshahi have come forward to express solidarity with him by forming a human chain at Shaheb Bazaar area of the city on Thursday noon.
Presided over by Columnist Prasnata Saha, the human chain programme was addressed, among others, by Selim Hossain, Chief of Jatiya Jatiya Mohila Ainjibee Samity Advocate Dilsetara Chuni, District Secretary of Mohila Parishad Anjana Sarker, Director of Paribartan Rased Ripon, Jatiya Party leader Salah Uddin Mintu and General Secretary of Angkur Mohila Cooperative Samity Tarina Sultana.
Speakers at the human chain demanded immediate arrest of the main culprit of the case Eklas Ali and his father Abul Kashem. Later on, organisers of the human chain submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police of Rajshahi in this connection.
It is learnt, the main culprit Eklas is the son-in-law of Selim Hossain. He raped her sister-in-law Eva Khatun. Being raped and insulted, Eva Khatun committed suicide at her own home at Ramjibonpur under Puthia upazila on April-9.
Later on, a case was filed with Puthia police station on the allegation of rape and instigation on the suicide of Eva against Selim and his parents. But, the accused in the case not being arrested even two months after the incident, Selim Hossain alone stood at Puthia Sadar area on Wednesday with a banner demanding arrest and immediate punishment of the accused of the case. Following the lone protest and demand of Selim Hossain, leaders and various organisations of the city also formed a human chain on Thursday noon and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits.
Mohammad Shahidullah, Superintendent of Police of Rajshahi has assured Selim Hossain and the organisers of the human chain to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.
