Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) is the first and only public university in Jashore, the country's first independent district, located in the southwestern part of the country.
With the aim of creating opportunities for modern knowledge practice and research through higher education, covering an area of 35 acres, the foundation stone of the university was laid at a place called Ambottola in Sajiali Mauza under Churamankati Union of Jashore Sadar Upazila, on January 25, 2007. Today, the university has entered 18 years after seventeen years of success.“If we review recent years, it can be seen that JUST has achieved unprecedented success in education, research, and sports compared to the universities established in contemporary times. JUST is the first university in the country to start the Corona test during the Corona period. Later, the university invented the 'Cyber Green' method to detect corona at a low cost. The university responded nationwide to the genome sequencing of coronaviruses, identifying new corona variants and testing coronaviruses”. The university officials said.
The university officials think that this progress has been made possible due to the efficient leadership of Ekushey medal-winning microbiologist JUST Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Anwar Hossain and the efforts of the JUST family. Vice Chancellor Dr Md Anwar Hossain expressed his determination to make the university the first research university in the country.
Initially, the university started with 200 students in four departments, but currently it has 27 departments. And there are 4 thousand 75 students at the undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil, and PhD levels. The total number of teachers in the university, including professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers, is 333. Apart from this, 139 officers and 319 employees of various grades are working at the university. Those who are working tirelessly day and night under the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Dr. Md. Anwar Hossen, to make Jashore University of Science and Technology a research-based, world-class university through their talent and labor.
JUST in the world ranking: Three teachers of JUST were ranked among the world's best 2% researchers in a joint survey of the world's leading medical and scientific article publishing company, "Elsevier," based in the United States and Stanford University in the Netherlands.
In Times Higher Education's SDG ranking, JUST was ranked among 800-1000 universities across the world. It has also been ranked No. 1 in research among science and technology universities in Elsevier's rankings over the past years.
Fully Residential University: JUST is going to become fully residential this year with the opening of the 10th-floor Munshi Mohammad Meherullah Student Hall and Bir Prateek Taraman Bibi Student Hall. The halls will ensure a complete learning environment for the students. If these halls are opened, the students will play a greater role in their academic activities and research, and the university authorities have expressed hope that the political instability of the country will not disrupt the education environment.
Session jammed and ragging-free campus: In the beginning of the university's journey, the academic environment was very fragile due to jammed sessions and ragging due to political instability.
The authorities have been able to create a stable environment by overcoming the influence of local politics.
Due to this, the university has been completely session jammed free for the last seven years. JUST is now one of the ragging-free campuses in the country as a result of the administration's zero-tolerance policy on ragging and various crimes.
Research and Innovation: Not only the COVID-19 test at JUST Genome Center detects another sub-variant of the Omicron type of the coronavirus 22D: Omicron/BA.2.75.
A group of university researchers developed a 'Cyber Green method' to detect the coronavirus at a low cost. For other contributions to science and research in 2022, JUST Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain was awarded the Ekushey Padak. In the Elsevier ranking published in December last year, JUST achieved the first position among the science and technology universities in Bangladesh. Cell culture and greenhouse work are in progress at this university. According to the Scopus database, in 2023, JUST was ranked first to publish research articles among the country's science and technology universities, eighth among public universities, and 12th among all public and private universities.
The university has published a total of 430 research papers in 2023.
