Teachers, students, and officials of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) formed a human chain on Saturday to demand the safety of their students. The demonstration took place at 12 noon under the university's library building.
The protest followed a troubling incident involving Ahanaf Tahmid Badhon, a second-year student from the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEBT) department. Last Friday, Badhan was attacked by a bus supervisor and his associates at the Monihar bus terminal in Jashore. The attack occurred during a dispute over the bus fare, resulting in Badhon being stabbed in the throat. The police arrested one of the attackers around 11 pm, after a human chain protest at the spot earlier in the evening.
Amzad Hossain, a teacher at JUST, spoke at the human chain, condemning the violent act. He emphasized the need for unity to ensure the future safety of all students. "We strongly condemn this incident and will always stand by our students to protect their security," Dr. Hossain said.
The university’s information officer, Mohammad Nazmul Hossain, also condemned the incident, stating that if similar events occur in the future, the university community will take to the streets in protest.
A student from the GEBT department present at the human chain expressed frustration, calling for immediate action. "We demand justice for this attack. If the criminals are not punished, we will be forced to take stronger measures, and more severe protests may follow," the student warned. The JUST community remains united in their demand for increased security and justice for the affected student.
