The Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, which has earned kudos for its different humanitarian activities during the pandemic, has taken an unprecedented housing initiative for the landless.
Inspired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Ashrayan Project marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Jubo League is the only political organisation in Bangladesh that has taken the steps to give homes to the poor from the personal fund.
Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash on Monday handed over 10 such houses to 10 families in a ceremony on the prime minister’s 75th birthday.
Earlier he called upon the party leaders and activists to build at least one house in each district for the landless marking the ‘Mujib Borsho’.
There has been overwhelming response to his call, Deputy Office Secretary Md Delwar Hossain Shahjada told Bangladesh Post.
"We'll be able to hand over at least 300 houses across the country," he said, adding that they had given them (those who are building the houses) the government approved design.
"Jubo League leaders are building those houses from their personal funds," he said, adding that the aim of the initiative is to support the prime minister’s efforts and encourage others to do the same.
