The newly appointed vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU), Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, has stressed the importance of creating a master plan based on the opinions of stakeholders. The plan aims to protect the university's natural environment and preserve its biodiversity. Dr Ahsan made these remarks during a meeting held in his office on Sunday, where the focus was on managing the university's waterbodies and conserving biodiversity.
According to the vice chancellor, the natural beauty of JU has deteriorated over time due to poor planning and filling of waterbodies. He emphasized that the campus needs to be developed in a more organized way to protect its environment. "The campus must be developed in a well-planned manner with the involvement of all stakeholders," he said.
A video presentation was shown during the meeting, highlighting the campus's 40 waterbodies and the importance of maintaining proper drainage systems. The presentation also stressed the need for conserving bird sanctuaries within the university.
Dr Ahsan pointed out that improving the university’s infrastructure must not come at the cost of the environment. He urged the management committee to take immediate steps to protect JU’s waterbodies and biodiversity.
The meeting was attended by several members of the management committee responsible for the upkeep of the campus’s natural resources. They discussed various strategies to restore and maintain the natural beauty of the university.
JU has long been known for its lush green surroundings, and the vice chancellor expressed his hope that the new master plan would help restore its former beauty while addressing future development needs
