Rezwoan Ahmed Shihab, a third-year student of Public Administration department of Jahangirnagar University (JU), sought financial support from the well offs for his mother’s treatment.
Shihab’s mother Fatema Khatun, a housewife, has been suffering from breast cancer for the last six months. Now she is undergoing treatment at Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital at Mirpur in the capital.
Quoting doctors, Shihab told the Bangladesh Post that about Tk 16 lakh is needed for his mother's treatment that is beyond his ability.
According to her physicians, she was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer. This type of cancer is more aggressive than other cancers. Depending on the type and method of treatment, an injection called TRASTUZUMAB has to be used 17 times. Each of which costs about Tk 64,000. In total Tk 11 lakh is required to complete the whole dose.
“I am the eldest son of the family. Unfortunately, my father lost his job from BRAC in 2016. Our family was supported by some of the money saved during my father's job as there is no earning person. So it is almost impossible for us to continue treatment in this situation,” said Shihab.
He also said, “Although we have managed Tk 4 lakh by selling the land of residence for chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, it is impossible for us to afford another huge amount of money to purchase injections. So I am seeking everyone's co-operation to save my mother's life.”
