Students of the Law Faculty at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have locked the entrance to the university’s administrative building to press for their three-point demand. The blockade started around 1:30 PM on Tuesday.
The students’ demands include a separate academic building for their faculty, re-evaluation of exam results, and the removal of two faculty members from their department. This protest follows their earlier submission of a memorandum to the vice-chancellor on September 24, giving a seven-day deadline to address their concerns. With no response from the administration after the deadline passed, the students resorted to the blockade. Arshadul Haq, a 49th batch student, said: "We have been protesting for two months for reasonable demands. The administration has held meetings but taken no real steps. We expect them to form an investigation committee today."
Another student, Jafrin Nuva from the 51st batch, added: "Our classes have been suspended for nearly 50 days. We informed the administration several times, but they ignored us. This is why we are protesting now." On social media, 49th batch student Sadat Kavi expressed frustration, saying: "The administration can quickly allocate spaces for luxury, but they cannot solve our issues. We are forced to hold classes in the registrar’s building due to a lack of classrooms for the Law Department."
Earlier, in the memorandum, students had also demanded the dismissal of two associate professors, the cancellation of the faculty’s separate ordinance, re-evaluation of exam papers since 2021, and an end to nepotism in faculty recruitment.
The blockade remains ongoing as of the latest report.
