Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ICT affairs adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy has asked the US embassy and the other western embassies in Dhaka to take note of the developments in the United States where social media sites banned President Donald Trump permanently for spreading falsehoods that led to violence.

“This is the limit of freedom of speech in the United States,” he wrote in a facebook post.

“Twitter and other social media in the US have banned the President of the US permanently, along with several other people and organisations that spread falsehoods that led to violence.

“For all of those who complain about our Digital Security Act, in the US the Government lets private companies dictate.

“In Bangladesh we believe that it should not be up to private companies, but up to the courts to decide.

“Everyone has the right to freedom of speech, but that freedom ends when you spread falsehoods that end up hurting others. No one has the right to hurt others.

“I want the US Embassy in Dhaka, as well as other western embassies to take note of this post. We do not want to see hypocritical statements from you in the future regarding freedom of speech in Bangladesh anymore,” read the comment.
