We express our profound shock and sorrow at the tragic death of 11 people, including seven of a family who were killed when a microbus carrying a bridal party plunged into a river in Amtali upazila of Barguna district on Saturday. We are also saddened to hear that many families lost their dear ones in road accidents in 21 districts across the country during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

At least 70 people, including children, died in separate road crashes during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays across the country, according to media reports. Relatives of the victims have got grief-stricken after losing their near and dear ones. We have no words to console them.

Road accidents are taking place every day claiming many lives. Of them, motorbike accidents have become more frequent.  According to data of road crashes, motorbikes are responsible for the highest number of accidents, followed by easy bikes. In most cases, reckless driving is the key reason for road accidents. But the authorities concerned hardly take any action against rash driving. Thousands of motorcycles and easy bikes (three-wheelers) are running illegally on roads and highways.

We cannot ensure road safety even after 52 years of the country’s independence. Such death is causing an irreparable loss to many families.

The government took several measures to enhance vigilance on roads and highways by utilising modern information technology to prevent road accidents. But road accidents still continue. Lack of investment in sustained road safety programme is also blamed for road accidents in our country. Unless we take effectives measures to prevent road accidents, we have to see such tragic deaths.  If the government fails to bring discipline on roads, there will be of no use doing massive development in the communication sector. Therefore, we urge the authorities concerned to bring discipline in road transport sector and find ways to prevent road accidents.
