Journalists in Rangamati demanded immediate unconditional release of Pradip Chowdhury, president of Khagrachhari Union of Journalists (KUJ), and sent a memorandum to the Chief Adviser through deputy commissioner (DC).
Journalists made the demand from a symbolical work abstain prgramme held at Banarupa Traffic Police Box area in the town on Monday.
While speaking, journalist leaders said home affairs adviser recently assured that if any case is filed against the journalists, no pressman will be arrested until the investigation is completed. Unfortunately, there were many journalists across the country who were arrested by police without inquiry in connection with different false cases.
Pradip Chowdhury was also arrested by police in the same manner from in front of Khagrachhari police station on Friday night. Several cases were filed against him including arson, vandalism, attack and instigation during the July-August mayhem.
They alleged that the arrest and harassment of journalists in such a way by accusing them in false and conspiracy cases is a flagrant violation of human rights and interference on the independent journalism. They demanded immediate unconditional release of Pradip Chowdhury and acquit him from all false cases.
Journalist leaders warned that tougher agitation will be launched if their demand is go unheeded.
