Ill, distressed, and unprivileged journalists in eight district of Rangpur division received honorarium cheque from Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust (BJWT) on Thursday.
A total of 24 journalists of the division received honorarium cheques, with each getting Tk 50,000.
On this occasion, a view exchange meeting titled ‘Ensuring Financial Security and Welfare for Journalists’ was held at the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner's Conference Hall, organized by the Bangladesh Journalists’ Welfare Trust, on Thursday at 3.00pm. The first installment of honorarium cheques for the 2024-2025 fiscal year was distributed during the programme.
The Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists’ Welfare Trust, Muhammad Abdullah, attended the event as the chief guest.
He said that by December 15, scholarships would be provided to two children of each journalist, ranging from sixth grade to postgraduate level. Additionally, senior journalists across the country would soon be brought under a pension scheme.
He further said in the past, financial assistance amounting to Tk 44 crore was provided to 12,500 journalists. However, assistance was often distributed based on political considerations rather than to genuine journalists. The Journalists’ Welfare Trust will work to ensure the welfare of genuine journalists.
The meeting was presided over by Rangpur Deputy Commissioner and President of the Bangladesh Journalists’ Welfare Trust, Mohammad Rabiul Faisal, and moderated by RPUJ general secretary, Sarkar Mazharul Mannan, while Salekuzzaman Salek, president of the Rangpur Press Union (RPUJ), was present as the special guest.
