Journalist Peer Habib passes away

Peer Habibur Rahman, executive editor of Bangladesh Pratidin, has passed away. He was 57.

He breathed his last at around 4 pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Labaid Hospital in the capital.

Earlier, Peer Habibur Rahman suffered a stroke while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Friday evening. He was later admitted to the Labaid Hospital. 

He was cured of cancer through bone marrow transplantation at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre in Mumbai of India in October last year.

He got infected with Covid-19 on January 22 this year and recovered later. He, however, was admitted to the BSMMU due to kidney problems and suffered a stroke there. 

Peer Habibur Rahman is survived by his wife, one son, one daughter, a host of relatives and numerous admirers.

His body will be kept on the premises of Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Later, the body will be taken to the premises of Dhaka Reports Unity (DRU) and a namaz-e-janaza will be held there. Another namaz-e-janaza will be held at the National Press Club after Johr prayers. Later, the body will be taken at the office of Bangladesh Pratidin where another namaz-e-janaza will be held. Peer Habib will be buried in Sunamganj on Sunday evening. 

Born on February 16 in 1964 in Sunamganj district town, Peer Habibur Rahman chose the journalism profession in 1984 while studying at Rajshahi University.

In his professional life, he worked with Dainik Banglabazar, Jugantor, Manabkantha, and Amader Samay. Founder of online news portal Purboposhchimbd, he last performed his duty as the executive editor of Bangladesh Pratidin. He was also organising secretary of the DRU. 

The DRU, the National Press Club, Dhaka-based Sylhet Division Journalists’ Association and different other organisations expressed deep shock at the death of the journalist.

In a joint statement, DRU President Nazrul Islam Mithu and General Secretary Nurul Islam Hasib prayed for eternal peace of the journalist and conveyed their deepest condolence to the bereaved family members.

In a joint statement, president of Sylhet Division Journalists’ Association Azizul Parvez and general secretary Jharna Moni prayed for salvation of the departed soul of the journalist and conveyed deep sympathy to his bereaved family.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Science and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman, State Minister for Water Resources Zahid Farooq and Deputy Minister AKM Enamul Haque Shamim and others also mourned the death of Peer Habibur Rahman. 

In a statement, Hasan Mahmud, also joint general secretary of Awami League, recalled the contribution of late Peer Habibur Rahman during his working life.

In a joint statement, Zahid Farooq and AKM Enamul Haque Shamim said that the country lost a famous journalist.
