Allegations have been made against leaders and activists of the Jagannath University unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for consuming food worth 7 lakh Taka on credit at the cafeteria of Jagannath University (JnU) in the last two and a half years. The director of the university cafeteria, Md. Masud has shared this information.
Masud said, “In the last two and a half years, unit BCL leaders and workers have eaten food which price is about seven lakh taka from the canteen. They have not paid that money yet. Now all of them are fugitives. They do not come to campus.”
He said that about one lakh 88 thousand taka has been written in the name of Ibrahim Farazi, president of JnU unit Chhatra League, and two lakh 50 thousand taka has been written in the name of unit Chhatra League general secretary S M Akhtar Hossain. Apart from them, there are at least five other leaders and workers of Chhatra League in the ‘on credit’ list.
Rabiul Islam Robi, known as the 'my man' of the unit Chhatra League president, has an outstanding amount of 52 thousands Taka. Meanwhile, Miraj, known as the group leader of the general secretary, has an outstanding amount of 75 thousand Taka. Vice-president Mehedi Hasan Babu has 55 thousand Taka outstanding in his name. Two more leaders from the general secretary’s panel, Tamim and Sajbul, have outstanding amounts of 12 thousand Taka and nine thousands Taka, respectively. In total, these seven leaders and activists of unit Chhatra League owe six lakh 41 thousand Taka to the cafeteria.
“These Chhatra League leaders have been eating on credit for a long time. They kept promising to pay but never did. Besides them, there are many others who have eaten small amounts, but those records are not kept. They used to take food without money, and if there was any delay in serving food they even assault the canteen staff”, said Cafeteria director Md. Masud
According to him, the cost of operating the cafeteria is 39 thousand 750 taka per week and one lakh 59 thousand taka per month. Apart from this, from where he buys goods, he also has to buy on credit for that.
Expressing his frustration he said, “How can I raise that much money now and how can I cover this loss.”
It was not possible to get statements from these accused unit Chhatra League leaders and activists as all of them are out of contact.
The director of student welfare of the university K A M Rifat Hasan said, “I am not aware of this. However, if the allegation is true; those against whom the complaint is made, if they are regular students; arrangements will be made to collect money from them and administrative measures will be taken.”
