Transplant Aman (T Aman) paddy farmers in Jhenaidah have brought a total of 104,612 hectares of land under T Aman farming in six upazilas of the district this season.
Of that 96,955 hectares were be cultivated with high yielding varieties (HYV) cultivation and the remaining 7,657 hectares with hybrid varieties, said a source related to Jhenaidah office of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
Good prices of the paddy and the straw had inspired the farmers in brining additional land under the paddy farming in the season which had exceeded the transplantation target.
Further, adequate rainfall in Bengali months late Bhadra and early Ashwin had reduced the irrigation cost of T Aman farming in the season which, will benefit the farmers, the farmers said.
When this correspondent visited Azampur union of Moheshpur upazila and Dohijuri and Ganna villages of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, he talked to a number of farmers.
The farmers said they had enjoyed the transplanting hours when the climate was suitable as there was adequate rainfall between late Bhadra and early Ashwin months.
This had reduced their irrigation cost about 60 to 70 percent in the season. Moreover, the suitable price of the paddy and straw has been ensuring them profit from the
main cereal crop for years together, they said.
DAE sources said the farmers of the district have produced 348,550 tones of rice on 104,128 hectares of land in Jhenaidah Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Shailkupa and Harinakundu upazilas last T Aman season.
Deputy Director of DAE in Jhenaidah Asgar Ali when contacted said the skill and trained farmers in the district use modern machinery, equipments and technology in farming that provide them better yield and profit.
