The farmers in Jhenidah have been reaping better from the jackfruit in the current season, while they had been deprived of fair prices since long. The present price has been satisfying the farmers.
Short supply of the national fruit due to severe damage by the storm Amphan was liable for the situation, said the officials of the department of agriculture extension (DAE) in Jhenidah. Farmer Rabiul Islam at Dakbangla weekly market in Jhenidah Sadar upazila when contacted said he sold his jackfruits at the rate of Taka 45 on an average.
The price was more than double than the past seasons. The farmers like him were disheartened due to least price or no demand of the fruit, he said. Farmer Ananta Biswas at Jheniah town market when asked said he received Taka 60 for a piece of jackfruit which was hardly Taka 25 in past years.
Jackfruit vendor Abdur Rahim of Pirojpur when contacted at Shailkupa town market on Saturday said they have been buying the fruit at double or more rate than the past years. As the storm Amphan had damaged major of the fruits, the supply of the same had reduced in the markets. It had helped increase the price.
Deputy Director of DAE in Jhenidah Kripangshu Shekhar Biswas when contacted said actually the famers are not benefited from the national fruit as the supply had reduced in the market due to heavy damage by the Amphan. As there is an acute shortage of te fruit, the price has increased naturally.
The filed level staffs of the DAE have been standing by the farmers for their wellbeing. They have been serving to help the famers in making up the loss caused by Amphan or any natural calamities, Biswas said.
