Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Abdul Awal said he is quite optimistic that the price of essential commodities will go down within a short time. He is also working to solve the suicide and drug addiction problem of Jhenaidah district, said the DC.

He expressed his hope that the prices of eggs, vegetables, edible oil and other commodities will come within the reach of the common people soon. District and upazila administration, Department of Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP), Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) and other departments are working together to solve the issue, he said.

In an interview with this correspondent, the Deputy Commissioner said, they have been closely monitoring the rice and other markets at a regular basis so that the dishonest businessmen could not hoard any essentials and demand excessive prices. Prices of eggs and some other essentials is decreasing day by day. The foodgrains and other wholesale traders were warned not to hoard the essentials, he said.

Regarding the alarming number of suicides in Jhenaidah, the DC said that it is a long-standing problem of the area. They have been trying to motivate the younger generation, especially, school and college going students so that they can be aware about what leads to such rash decision. To ensure regular attendance in educational institutions, he, along with his officials have been visiting the educational institutions frequently and meeting the teachers to reduce the number of dropouts.

He also advised the teachers to spread awareness among the guardians so that they t send their children to on time and monitor their activities closely even after the class hours.

The Deputy Commissioner said there are severe drug addiction problems in some parts of the district. He, along with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police and other law enforcing agencies are working to address the problem. However, a part of the district is situated near the neighboring border in India, which makes it hard to tackle it.

As there was a major change in the country, it will take some time to restore the normalcy of the country. However, the DC expressed his hope that people from all walks of life will soon be able to enjoy their regular life again.
