The Jashore-Jhenaidah highway at Bishoykhali point turned dilapidated in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila due to lack of maintenance for a long time, causing immense sufferings to commuters.
Several road accidents took place on the road in the area in last two months. The bitumen coating has been removed in many places of the road. The road in Jhenaidah has been lying in a very bad shape for so long.
A large number of pedestrians and vehicles use the highway every day. Several commuters expressed their dissatisfaction over the poor condition of the road. The road needs a construction work as soon as possible for safe transit of the people, they added.Some local vendors including the tea-stall owners said at least 20 to 30 motorcyclists fell victim of fatal accidents when they tried to cross the highway in last two months. Besides, 200 other motorcyclists were injured during this time. The wheels of the motorcycles were jammed on the damaged highway, causing accidents.
A trucker, Abdul Matin, said that many truck drivers cross Bishoykhali area on Jhenaidah-Jashore highway with strictly cautionary measures as the road went unfit for vehicular movement.
An official of the office of the executive engineer of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in Jhenaidah said the road was handed over to WeCARE section when it went under the six-lane road construction of phase 1 project. The project authorities might solve the problem now, not the RHD, the engineer said.
