A team from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Kazi Kamal Ahmed Babu, Secretary of Relief and Social Welfare for the Jhenaidah District Committee of the ruling Awami League, for questioning in connection with the murder of Anwarul Azim Anar.
Anar, a three-time Member of Parliament for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency and President of the Awami League's Kaliganj upazila branch, was killed in West Bengal, India. Police arrested Babu in Adarsh Para on Thursday night.
Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police (SP) Azim-ul-Ahsan confirmed that the Detective Branch (DB) police team had been in the city for several days. They arrested Babu and took him to Dhaka that night, but SP Azim-ul-Ahsan was not informed about the reasons for Babu's detention.
Local sources indicated that Kazi Kamal Ahmed Babu is a close relative of Shimul Bhuiyan and Aktaruzzaman Shaheen of Kotchandpur, who is allegedly the mastermind behind MP Anar's murder and currently resides in America. Many believe that the DB police arrested Babu based on information related to the murder provided by other suspects.
Shafiqul Islam Apu, President of the Jhenaidah District branch of the Awami League and former Member of Parliament, stated that he had also heard about Babu's arrest by the DB police.
He emphasized that given the brutal nature of Anwarul Azim Anar's murder, law enforcement agencies are justified in detaining individuals for questioning to uncover the truth. Apu stressed the importance of a thorough investigation and the need for exemplary punishment for those responsible to prevent future heinous crimes.
