Jharna Dhara recalled on her 1st death anniv

The first death anniversary of Jharna Dhara Chowdhury was observed with due respect through placing garland of flowers on her image, candle lighting, special prayer and discussion meeting at Gandhi Ashram on Saturday.

Tarani Kumar Das, Secretary of the trust, chaired the event while Raha Naba Kumar, Director of the Trust moderatored it.  Among others, Shankar Bikash Paul, Chief Accounts Officer, Ashim Kumar Bakshi, Peace Coordinator, Khairuzzaman Khokan, Monitoring & Documentation Coordinator of the Trust spoke at the meeting.  

It is mentionable that Mahatma Gandhi visited Noakhali when Communal Riot occurred in 1946. Gandhiji and his followers started working for peace and harmony in the riot affected areas. At that time, Jharna Dhara Chowdhury engaged in social service from her childhood.

Jharna Dhara Chowdhury was born in Kalupur Village of Ramgonj upazila in Lakshmipur. Her mother’s name was Ashalata Devi and father’s name was Promotho Chowdhury. She faced many obstructions and could not be regular in study.  

She passed Matriculation from Khastogir Girls High School in Chattogram, passed Intermediate in Arts from Victoria College in Cumilla and completed Graduation from Dhaka College under the University of Dhaka. 

She was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi’s sacrifice- philosophy, vegetarian, wore Khadi cloths and used to lead a simple life.

She achieved many honoring, rewards  and awards from national and international level as recognition of her social works.
